Background:
Skin-related problems account for a large proportion of
the workload of District, Community and Practice Nurses.
Skin problems are also common in hospital and may contribute
significantly to the workload of nurses. However,
education and teaching of nursing in relation to patients with skin disease is
largely absent in current nursing training.
Aim of each module:
The aim of each diploma-level 2 module is to focus on
nursing issues in relation to patients suffering from common skin complaints.
Particular emphasis is placed on the teaching of a practical approach to
dermatological nursing in order to equip nurses with skills and knowledge that
are useful to meet the demands of managing skin disease.
Educational study days:
Educational study days are compulsory and an introductory
day and two educational study days are included in the module and take place in Central London, South Wales or Birmingham.
Hours of Study:
It is anticipated that students require 230 hours for
independent study and up to 10 days of negotiated visit(s).
The amount of study required for each educational unit will vary
according to personal experience. It
is anticipated that 5-6 hours of private study will be required per week and
that each educational unit will require approximately 30 hours of private study
to complete.
Summative Assignment:
A written assignment of no more than 4000 words will be
required towards the end of the module (summative assessment).
The assignment requires an in-depth case study which draws from the
knowledge and skills gained from the reflection points, clinical attachments and
private study of the subject.
Award:
Certificates of completion will be awarded to those who
pass the summative assessment and successfully complete the clinical skills
learning schedule to the required level.
Assessment:
Assessment for the module will include three separate
areas: The marks for notes relating to reflection points written for each of the
educational units (formative assessment); the mark for the assignment (summative
assessment); finally, nurses will be assessed to ensure that their clinical
skills learning schedule is complete and at the required level and they have
acquired the practical skills taught in each of the six educational units.
Assessment of modules by participating nurses:
Nurses who enrol on this module will be encouraged to
give feedback concerning the style, content and merits of the module.
It is our intention to run the module twice a year and to improve the
module each time by learning from experience gained.
Feedback is essential if the course is to meet the demands of the nurses
for whom it is intended.
Additional Costs:
Accommodation on the study weekend is not included
in the course fee. However, a study pack of photocopies of key references will
be supplied with course material.
