Phototherapy Unit, Department of Dermatology

These intensive four-day courses in UV phototherapy have been organised for qualified nurses and physiotherapists who have not previously received formal training in this form of treatment. The courses are aimed at novices in phototherapy, but also those who are currently working in skin clinics and feel that their training in phototherapy and PUVA has been deficient. It will also be of benefit to nurses and physiotherapists who wish to update and consolidate their knowledge in this increasingly complicated subject.

Topic coverage: The courses will cover the basics of phototherapy and PUVA, to allow insight into how good working practices can be developed from a firm grasp of first principles. Both theoretical and practical aspects of the subjects will be covered, including: the UV radiation spectrum, radiation protection and measurement, effects of UV on the skin, photoresponsive diseases, pharmacology of topical and oral psoralens, PUVA, UV-B therapy (narrow-band), management of adverse events, counselling and consent of patients, clinic documentation, phototherapy for children, medical audit and quality control, health education and research. There will also be an introductory module on photodynamic therapy (PDT) for skin disorders.

Accommodation and meals: Accommodation is not included in the cost. Meals are available in the hospital restaurants at NHS staff prices, on presentation of a Training and Development ID badge (issued on arrival). There are informal social events on some evenings, and a formal Course Dinner on the Thursday.

Cost: The course fee of £550 is inclusive of all teaching materials, a copy of the Gwent Healthcare Phototherapy Training Manual, hand-outs, reprints, and the Course Dinner (but not including accommodation and other meals). This course fee is subject to revision on a yearly basis and will be adjusted to meet increased costs. If the course is cancelled by the applicant 6 weeks before commencement of the course no refund will be given. If the place is cancelled 2 months before the course 50% of the course fees would be expected. All other cancellations would incur a 20% administrative charge. Payment by cheque payable to Academic Dermatology, or by invoice to delegate’s employing Trust, is to be made before the commencement of the course. If payment is not received 6 weeks prior to commencement the place will be given to the next person on the waiting list

Certificate of Competence: A certificate of competence to practise phototherapy and PUVA will be presented to course delegates who complete the training and pass the written assessments.

Booking a place on the course: Please return the application form, with a brief summary of your background training and career (a short CV will be fine). On receipt of the completed application form confirmation will be sent with a course confirmation slip enclosed which you will need to fill in and return. Your course fee would need to be sent to the address below:

Course Administrator, Academic Unit, Block C, St Woolos Hospital, Stow Hill, NEWPORT, Gwent NP20 4SZ. Tel 01633 238561

Places on the course will be limited to ten to ensure an interactive and personalised teaching environment, so those wishing to attend should book early to ensure a place.
